Gluten Free Food Coloring Free Birthday Cake
Sage asked for a bird themed birthday party. I am really only posting this to show off how amazing her cake turned out. The secret is to know where to buy candy without food coloring. The answer is Trader Joe's - but beware lots of their candy while food coloring free is NOT gluten free and only some that is also corn free. The cake is King Arthur's gluten free chocolate. The frosting is homemade vanilla.
Here is what I did:
-I used the chocolate and candy covered sunflower seeds for the feathers. Basically they are your substitute for M & Ms.
-The outline is salt water taffy that I rolled and used kind of like fondant.
-Tail feathers are these square jelly Fruit Jellies. I cut them and fanned them. The bottom border are also made out of these cut thin.
-The eye is a gum drop I cut in half.
There is actually not much candy on this cake - total included 1 1/2 pieces of saltwater taffy, 6 fruit jellies, 1/2 a gumdrop and maybe 1/4 cup of sunflower seed candy. But the effect is great. I will use the left over candy for gingerbread man/houses in December.
